Connect Your Domain Name to Your Website

If you’ve already purchased a top-level URL (www.example.com) from a third-party hosting service like GoDaddy.com, you can set that URL as the primary domain for your Placester real estate website.

Step 1.

If you’ve already created your real estate website, navigate to your WordPress dashboard by clicking on the Marketing tab.

Select your website from the list provided. If you have not already created a website, check out our How to Create a Website article to continue.

Step 2.

Click the “Tools” tab the left-hand sidebar, then choose “Domain Mapping.”

Enter the URL you wish to use for your website, then check the box to set this as the primary domain.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must include the full website URL, including “www”, in your primary domain URL. You must also type the entire URL in lowercase letters — do not use uppercase letters.

Step 3.

Before this change goes into effect, you’ll need to log into the hosting service you purchased your domain from and adjust a few settings. Steps will differ depending on the host, but in all cases you must create two things: an A-record and a CNAME.

An A-record is an entry within the DNS (Domain Name System, the service that translates human-friendly URLs into computer friendly numbers that point your domain to a static IP address. In this case, you’ll add an A-record that points to the IP address 184.169.141.142

You will create or edit an A-Record with the following information:

Alias/Name: @
Type: A or A-Record
Points to: 184.169.141.142

IMPORTANT NOTE: If a record with the name or alias of “@” already exists, delete this record or edit it to match the IP given above.

A Canonical Name (CNAME) record is an entry within the DNS that specifies where users can find your web pages. Think of the CNAME as an alias for your website, telling the DNS where to redirect anyone who visits the default subdomain we’ve provided for you (yourname.placester.net). Your CNAME record should point to the following location: [yoursubdomain].placester.net.

You will replace [yoursubdomain] with your own personal website subdomain. You select this subdomain when you first create your real estate website. It can be found, as in Step 1, by clicking on the Marketing tab in your Placester account.

You will create or edit a CNAME record with the following information:

Alias/Name: www
Type: C or CNAME
Points to: [yoursubdomain].placester.net

IMPORTANT NOTE: If a record with the name or alias of “www” already exists, delete this record or edit it to match the domain given above.

Note that the setup process can take up to 48 hours to go into effect. For detailed step-by-step instructions specific to your hosting service, consult this help article.
